Toward One Brain: Integrating Science, Technology, and Global Collaboration
In Global Health, the "One Health" approach emphasizes a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative framework to address challenges on a local, national, and global scale. We believe that neuroscience would benefit from a "One Brain"approach—where research is inherently transdisciplinary, integrating biologists, engineers, computational scientists, educators, and policymakers to advance our understanding of the brain and improve human health.
At the Micro Level: The Brain as an Adaptive System
The brain is a dynamic community of interacting cell types, whose identities and functions are shaped by their microenvironment. Our research seeks to uncover the molecular, bioelectrical, and circuit-level mechanisms that establish and refine neuronal identity. We explore the limits of cell fate transitions and how external cues influence neuronal diversity, particularly in neurodevelopmental disorders. To achieve this, we integrate single-cell genomics, in vivo reprogramming models, high-density electrophysiology, and bioengineering approaches to study neuronal specification and plasticity.
Additionally, we harness AI and deep learning to decode complex, high-dimensional datasets, advancing our ability to classify neuronal subtypes, predict differentiation trajectories, and develop novel therapeutic strategies. By leveraging organoid models and bioelectronic tools, we aim to reconstruct and manipulate microenvironmental cues, providing deeper insights into neuronal development, function, and disease.
At the Macro Level: Expanding Neuroscience Beyond the Lab
We are committed to a holistic approach to neuroscience—one that extends beyond fundamental research to impact education, global collaboration, and public engagement. Our mission includes:
Scaling neuroscience education using emerging technologies like the Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, and AI-driven platforms to make experimental science training more accessible worldwide.
Fostering international collaboration through neurodiplomacy—leveraging science as a tool to build connections across cultures and nations, ensuring equitable access to knowledge.
Exploring the evolutionary dimensions of the brain by comparing neuronal identity and function across species, from humans to Arctic mammals and songbirds, to uncover principles of adaptation and resilience.
Developing AI-powered multimodal platforms to bridge genetics, electrophysiology, and environmental influences in understanding neurodevelopmental disorders.
By uniting neuroscience with bioengineering, computation, and global education, we move toward a "One Brain" vision—where discoveries in brain research are made more accessible, scalable, and impactful across disciplines and borders.
